Quick answer
As of October 2026, GOV.UK's standard for a UK visit visa applied for from Pakistan is 3 weeks, counted from your biometrics appointment at the visa centre. Priority costs £500 extra and usually gives a decision in about 5 working days. Super priority costs £1,000 extra, usually by the end of the next working day. Availability depends on your visa centre, and complex cases can take longer.

"How long will my UK visa take?" is one of the first questions every applicant asks. The honest answer has two parts: the official standard, and everything that happens before and around it. This guide covers both for the UK visit visa processing time from Pakistan as of October 2026.
It is for anyone applying for a Standard Visitor visa from Lahore, Islamabad or Karachi: families, tourists and business travellers. By the end you will know when the clock starts, what priority and super priority cost, how to check if they are offered at your centre, what causes delays, and how far ahead to apply.
How long does a UK visit visa take from Pakistan?
The official answer is 3 weeks. The GOV.UK page Visa processing times: applications outside the UK (last updated 9 September 2026) lists 3 weeks for Standard Visitor applications. The Home Office's customer service standard for visitors gives the same figure.
Three details matter:
- The clock starts at your biometrics appointment, not when you submit the online form or pay.
- Time is counted in UK working weeks (Monday to Friday). GOV.UK's wording on UK public holidays is not fully consistent, so allow a few extra days around Christmas, New Year and Easter.
- The standard applies to straightforward cases. GOV.UK lists situations that take longer (see below).
When does the 3-week clock start?
According to GOV.UK, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) starts processing once you either:
- attend your appointment at a visa application centre to give fingerprints and a photo, or
- verify your identity using the UK Immigration: ID Check app, if you are told you can use it.
The ID Check app guidance limits the app to certain passports, such as biometric passports from EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Pakistani passport holders should expect to attend a visa centre in person.
A realistic timeline
| Step | What happens | Who controls the timing |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Online form and fee | Apply and pay on GOV.UK | You |
| 2. Appointment booking | Book a slot at a visa centre in Pakistan | Slot availability at the centre |
| 3. Biometrics | Fingerprints, photo and documents | The appointment date. Clock starts |
| 4. Decision | Standard: 3 weeks. Priority: about 5 working days. Super priority: usually next working day | UKVI |
| 5. eVisa | Link the eVisa to your UKVI account; usually immediate, up to 24 hours | You and UKVI |
The GOV.UK Standard Visitor apply page explains the eVisa step. Step 2 is often where applicants lose time in busy months, so book early.
Priority and super priority: cost and timing
GOV.UK's Get a faster decision on your visa page sets out two paid services, as of October 2026:
| Service | Extra cost per applicant | Usual decision time |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | None | 3 weeks |
| Priority | £500 | About 5 working days |
| Super priority | £1,000 | By the end of the next working day (2 working days if your appointment is at a weekend or on a bank holiday) |
Points to know before paying:
- The time runs from your appointment, just like the standard service.
- Every family member pays separately. If a family applies together, each person pays the extra fee and everyone gets their decision at the same time.
- It buys speed, not a different decision. The same rules and evidence apply.
- Refunds are limited. Under GOV.UK's refund rules for faster decisions, you will not get a refund if your application is refused, or if the decision is late because the Home Office needed more information. If you attend in person, cancelling usually only gets a refund before you give fingerprints and a photo.
Are priority services available in Pakistan?
GOV.UK says you can request a faster decision on most visas from outside the UK, that you will be told during your application whether priority is available, and that you should check if your visa application centre offers it.
We could not confirm from an official page, as of October 2026, which services are offered at each Pakistani centre on any given date. Availability can change with demand. The reliable way to check is the online application itself and the booking page you are sent to after paying.
Two practical points from the files we handle:
- Priority slots can be limited in peak months, so a priority decision does not help if the earliest appointment is weeks away.
- Optional extras sold at the visa centre, such as convenience services, are separate from UKVI's priority services. They don't speed up the decision.
UK visa application centres in Pakistan
The GOV.UK find a visa application centre page sends applicants in Pakistan to VFS Global, which runs the UK visa centres. The main centres are in Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi. Check the VFS Global Pakistan site for current centre locations and opening hours before you book.
- You must apply and pay on GOV.UK before booking an appointment.
- Use the booking link GOV.UK gives you, not a third-party website.
- Take your original passport and the documents you were asked to bring.
UK visit visa fees as of October 2026
From the GOV.UK Standard Visitor fees:
| Visa | Visa fee | With priority | With super priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 6 months | £135 | £635 | £1,135 |
| 2-year long-term | £506 | £1,006 | £1,506 |
| 5-year long-term | £903 | £1,403 | £1,903 |
| 10-year long-term | £1,128 | £1,628 | £2,128 |
The last two columns simply add the GOV.UK priority fees to the visa fee. Any optional services you buy at the visa centre are extra. The visa fee is not refunded if you are refused.
Why do some UK visa applications take longer?
GOV.UK says an application may take longer if, for example:
- the information is not accurate or needs further consideration
- you need to provide more evidence, such as proof of funds
- your supporting documents need to be verified
- you need to attend an interview
- more information is needed about your personal circumstances
- UKVI has high demand or a technical outage
The Home Office's Visit caseworker guidance explains how files are routed. Applications are sorted by complexity. A file is treated as complex if, among other things:
- nothing but the application form is submitted
- some information is missing, so it cannot be assessed in full
- the evidence shows irregularities that need checking
- a previous application was refused on suitability grounds
When the statements on the form are backed by clear evidence, the guidance says that ordinarily lets a decision-maker assess the application more quickly. In plain terms: a complete, consistent file is the closest thing to a fast track that you control.
Weak financial evidence is a common cause of extra checks. Our UK visa bank statement guide explains what UKVI looks for.
When should you apply?
- Earliest: 3 months before you travel, according to GOV.UK.
- Our suggestion: apply 6 to 8 weeks before travel, leaving time for an appointment, 3 weeks of processing and a margin for delays.
- Don't book travel first. GOV.UK says you should not book travel until you have a decision, and that UKVI will not reimburse travel costs if an application is refused or takes longer than expected.
- Peak periods: summer holidays, graduation season and Christmas are busy. Apply earlier for those dates.
How to check your application's progress
- Use GOV.UK's check your visa processing time service. Enter the date you gave your biometrics and it tells you when to expect a decision.
- GOV.UK says not to contact UKVI while you are still within the processing time, because it cannot give status updates.
- If the processing time has passed and nobody has contacted you, contact UKVI.
- If you left your passport at the centre, GOV.UK says not to return until you are contacted.
Common mistakes that cost time
- Paying for priority with a weak file. Missing evidence still causes delays, and the extra fee is not refunded.
- Booking flights before the decision.
- Late employer or sponsor letters that hold up the appointment. Our UK visa sponsorship letter guide shows what a sponsor's letter needs.
- Mismatched dates between the form, the sponsor's letter and leave approval.
- Not declaring a previous refusal. Our guide to UK visit visa refusal reasons explains why honesty matters.
- Ignoring UKVI emails. If UKVI asks for more information, the decision waits until you reply.

Frequently asked questions
Does the 3-week processing time include getting an appointment?
No. GOV.UK says processing starts when you attend your visa application centre appointment to give fingerprints and a photo. The time spent filling the form, paying and waiting for an appointment slot comes before that, so build it into your plans.
Is a refused priority application refunded?
No. GOV.UK says that if your application is refused, you will not get a refund. The priority fee is also not usually refunded if the decision is late because the Home Office needed more information. A refund may be considered if the delay was caused by something outside the applicant's control, such as a technical problem.
Can I upgrade to priority after my biometrics appointment?
GOV.UK does not describe an upgrade after the appointment. It says you are told during the application whether a faster service is available, and refunds of the priority fee depend on whether you have already given biometrics. Decide before you attend.
Does a 2, 5 or 10-year visa take longer to process?
GOV.UK lists the same 3-week standard for all Standard Visitor applications. But UKVI must be satisfied that you will remain a genuine visitor over the whole period, and the Home Office guidance allows it to issue a shorter visa than you asked for, with no refund of the difference.
Can I travel on the day my visa is approved?
Once approved, you get an eVisa that you link to your UKVI account. GOV.UK says access is usually immediate but can take up to 24 hours. Check that the eVisa shows correctly before you fly, and don't book non-refundable travel before the decision.
