Quick answer
A UK visa sponsorship letter is a signed letter from the person in the UK who is hosting or paying for a visitor. UKVI does not require one or publish a template, but it helps explain who pays for what. It must match the sponsor's evidence: proof of UK status, income, savings and accommodation. The letter supports the application. It does not guarantee a visa.

If a parent, sibling or friend in Pakistan is coming to visit you in the UK, you will probably be asked for a UK visa sponsorship letter. It is one of the most searched documents for UK visit visas, and one of the most misunderstood.
This guide is for the person in the UK who is inviting or paying for a visitor, and for the applicant in Pakistan putting the file together. You will learn what UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) actually checks about a sponsor, what the letter should say, which documents must go with it, and the mistakes that make a letter work against the application. There is a template you can adapt at the end.
If you are inviting your parents, our UK visit visa guide for parents from Pakistan covers the whole parents' file. This post goes deeper on the letter itself.
Is a sponsorship letter required for a UK visit visa?
No. There is no official sponsorship form for visitors, and UKVI does not publish a template. The UKVI guide to supporting documents (last updated 8 October 2026) has a section called "If you have a sponsor". It says that if someone else is providing your travel, maintenance or accommodation, you should give evidence showing:
- what support is being provided, and whether it covers any dependants
- how the support is provided
- that the sponsor has enough money for themselves and their own dependants
- your relationship with the sponsor
- that the sponsor is legally in the UK, if applicable
A sponsorship letter is the simplest way to explain the first two points and the relationship. The other points need documents, not words.
One point of confusion: "sponsor" here has nothing to do with a sponsor licence or a Certificate of Sponsorship. Those belong to work visas. A visitor's sponsor is simply the person or organisation helping with the trip.
Who can sponsor a UK visitor?
The rule is paragraph V 4.3 of Appendix V: Visitor. A third party can pay for a visitor's travel, maintenance and accommodation only if they:
- have a genuine professional or personal relationship with the visitor
- are not in breach of UK immigration law at the time of the decision
- can and will support the visitor for the whole planned stay
The Home Office Visit caseworker guidance (updated 8 October 2026) adds detail. A sponsor who is a friend or family member must show enough funds to support themselves, anyone who normally depends on them, and the visitor. No fixed bank balance is set. The caseworker also looks at the sponsor's history of sponsoring visitors before. If the sponsor is a friend, they may be asked where and how they met the applicant and how often they keep in touch.
So the sponsor can be a son or daughter, a sibling, a cousin, a friend, or a UK company inviting a business visitor. What matters is that the relationship is real and the money is clearly there.
What should a UK visa sponsorship letter include?
Keep it to one page, factual and specific. Every detail should match the visa form and the documents.
| Section | What to write | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Sponsor's details | Full name, date of birth, UK address, phone, email | Lets UKVI identify and contact the sponsor |
| UK status | British citizen, settled, or visa type and expiry | V 4.3 requires a lawful sponsor |
| Visitor's details | Full name, date of birth, passport number | Links the letter to the application |
| Relationship | How you are related, or how and when you met | Must be a genuine relationship |
| Purpose and dates | Why they are coming, arrival and return dates | Must match the visa form |
| Accommodation | Address, number of rooms, who lives there | Shows a real place to stay |
| Who pays for what | Flights, food, travel in the UK, medical costs | Shows the extent of support |
| Ability to pay | Job, income, savings, and your regular commitments | Points to the evidence attached |
| Return to Pakistan | Planned return date and the reason they go back | Supports the temporary nature of the visit |
| Attachments | A short list of documents enclosed | Helps the caseworker find the evidence |
| Signature and date | Signed by the sponsor, dated close to the application | Shows the letter is current |
UK visa sponsorship letter template (example to adapt)
The template below is an example only. Replace every bracket with your real details and remove anything that does not apply. Never copy a letter word for word or include anything that is not true. A letter that does not match the evidence does more harm than no letter at all.

For a business visit, the letter comes from the UK organisation on its letterhead instead. It should describe the meetings or event, the dates, and which costs the company will cover. The Visitor Rules allow a UK source to pay reasonable travel and subsistence expenses, but not a salary or fee for work.
Which documents should the sponsor attach?
The letter only tells UKVI what the sponsor is offering. These documents prove it.
Proof of UK status
- British citizens: a copy of the photo page of the British passport.
- Everyone else: an eVisa share code. Under the GOV.UK prove your status service, a share code lasts 90 days, so generate it close to the application date and include your date of birth.
Proof of income and savings
- Recent payslips and a letter from the employer confirming the job and salary
- UK bank statements showing the salary arriving and normal spending
- Self-employed sponsors: tax returns or accounts and business bank statements
What UKVI looks for in statements, and what makes a balance look borrowed, is covered in detail in our UK visa bank statement guide. The same principles apply to the sponsor's account.
Proof of accommodation
- Tenancy agreement, mortgage statement or proof of ownership
- If renting a room or sharing a house, a short note from the landlord or owner confirming the visitor may stay
Proof of the relationship
- For family: the visitor's NADRA Family Registration Certificate (FRC), birth certificates or Nikah Nama as relevant
- For friends: photos alone are weak, but messages, past visits or other evidence of a long-standing friendship can help
UKVI's guide lists some sponsor documents as "less useful" evidence: utility bills, council tax bills, hotel bookings, flight bookings and travel insurance. They do not hurt, but they cannot replace proof of income, status and a real home.
How does UKVI check the sponsor?
The caseworker reads the sponsor's letter against everything else in the file. The Home Office guidance lists, as reasons to doubt an application:
- discrepancies between what the applicant says and what the sponsor says, especially on points the sponsor should know
- information that cannot be verified
- a sponsor or close family member who has tried to deceive the Home Office in a past application
The guidance also says that if the sponsor's support has not been declared on the form, and the applicant cannot show money is genuinely theirs, those funds should not be counted. So make sure the visa form clearly says who is paying.
What a sponsorship letter cannot do
A sponsorship letter is helpful, but it has limits:
- It is not a guarantee. The Home Office guidance says third-party undertakings cannot be treated as a guarantee that a visitor will comply with their visa, and caseworkers must not ask for or accept a written guarantee about the length of stay.
- It cannot replace the visitor's own ties. UKVI still has to be satisfied that the applicant will leave the UK at the end of the visit. Their job, family, property and responsibilities in Pakistan carry that weight.
- It cannot fix weak finances. A generous letter from a sponsor on a modest income with large commitments will not persuade a caseworker.
If a previous application was refused, the refusal letter will show what UKVI doubted. Our guide to UK visit visa refusal reasons explains how to address each one.
Common mistakes in UK sponsorship letters
- Copying an online template word for word. Caseworkers read many letters. A generic letter that says nothing specific reads as weak.
- Dates that don't match. The arrival date, return date and length of stay must match the visa form exactly.
- Saying "I guarantee" or offering a bond. It adds nothing and can look like an attempt to buy credibility.
- Overstating income or savings. The letter must match the payslips and statements to the pound, or close to it.
- Forgetting commitments. UKVI subtracts rent, mortgage and dependants. Say what they are; the caseworker will work them out anyway.
- Large transfers just before applying. If the sponsor sends money to the visitor, explain it in the letter and show the matching transaction on both sides.
- Describing work. "My mother will look after the children while we work" can read like a caring job. Describe it as a family visit, and keep it accurate.
- An undated or unsigned letter, or one dated months before the application.

Frequently asked questions
Does the sponsorship letter need to be notarised or attested?
No. UKVI's guide to supporting documents lists notarial certificates as one of the document types that are less useful as evidence. A clear letter with the sponsor's signature, date and contact details is enough. Spend the money on getting the sponsor's financial evidence right instead.
Can a friend, not a relative, sponsor a UK visit?
Yes. Appendix V allows support from a third party with a genuine personal or professional relationship. Friends should explain how and when they met the visitor and how they keep in touch, because the Home Office guidance says caseworkers may check exactly that.
Can the sponsor be on a work or student visa in the UK?
Yes, if they are in the UK lawfully and can afford to support themselves, their dependants and the visitor. They should attach an eVisa share code and evidence of income. A student with limited income may find it hard to show they can support a visitor as well as themselves.
Should the sponsor promise that the visitor will return to Pakistan?
The sponsor can state that the visit is temporary and give the return date, but a promise or 'guarantee' carries little weight. The Home Office guidance says third-party undertakings cannot be treated as a guarantee of compliance. The visitor's own ties to Pakistan matter far more.
Do we need a sponsorship letter if the visitor is paying for everything?
Not for funding. If the visitor pays their own costs and stays in a hotel, a sponsor letter adds little. If they will stay with a host, a short invitation letter confirming the address and dates is still helpful, along with proof of the host's status and accommodation.
