Bank Statement for a Visa from Pakistan: What Embassies Actually Check

Bank Statement for a Visit Visa: What embassies really check, over a photo of a city skyline at sunset with a plane overhead

Quick answer

Embassies use your bank statement to see whether you can afford the trip and whether the money is really yours. As of October 2026, Schengen consulates in Pakistan ask for six months of signed, stamped statements plus an NTN and FBR tax returns. The UK sets no minimum balance but checks where funds came from. Unexplained large deposits are a common problem.

Almost every visit visa file from Pakistan includes a bank statement, and it is the document officers read most closely. A good bank statement for a visa from Pakistan does two jobs. It shows you can pay for the trip, and it shows that the money is really yours and was not borrowed for the application.

This guide is for first-time applicants, business owners and families who are preparing financial documents for the UK, a Schengen country, Australia or Asia. By the end you will know how many months to print, what a bank maintenance certificate is for, why sudden deposits cause trouble, and how your FBR tax returns and a sponsor's account fit together.

We quote official guidance only. Where a government sets no minimum balance, we say so instead of inventing one. To estimate a sensible amount for your own trip, use our visit visa fund calculator after reading this.

What do embassies look for in a bank statement?

Officers are not just checking the closing balance. They read the statement like a story of your finances. In the files we review, these are the questions they are trying to answer:

  • Can you afford this trip? Flights, hotels and daily costs, compared with what you earn and hold.
  • Is the money yours? Funds that arrive just before the application, without an explanation, look borrowed.
  • Does it match the rest of your file? Salary credits should match your payslips. Business income should match your tax returns.
  • Will you still have a life to return to? Spending most of your savings on one trip can suggest you are not planning to come back.

The UK's visit caseworker guidance puts it plainly: "There is no set level of funds required." Instead, an applicant's income or savings, minus their financial commitments, must be enough to meet the likely costs of the visit. The EU's Visa Code (Regulation 810/2009, Article 21(5)) says the same in its own words: means of subsistence are assessed according to the duration and purpose of the stay.

How many months of bank statement do you need?

The answer depends on the country. These are the official positions we could confirm as of October 2026:

Destination What the official guidance asks for Source
Schengen countries (applying in Pakistan) Statements showing movements in the last six months, signed and stamped by the bank EU list of supporting documents for Pakistan
United Kingdom Statements that show the origin of the funds. No fixed number of months; statements issued more than 1 year before applying are listed as not useful GOV.UK supporting documents guide
Australia (Visitor visa) Itemised personal bank statements for a 3-month period, among other proof of funds Home Affairs, subclass 600 page
Thailand (e-Visa) Financial evidence of at least 20,000 baht, for example statements for the last three months Thai e-Visa system checklist

The Schengen requirement comes from the European Commission's list of supporting documents for short-stay visa applicants in Pakistan (Implementing Decision C(2018) 6863, Annex III), which Schengen consulates in Pakistan use as their common baseline. Norway's embassy, for example, repeats it word for word in its 2025 checklist for Pakistan. Individual consulates can add requirements, so always read your consulate's own checklist too.

For the UK, the guide to supporting documents (updated 8 October 2026) asks for "bank statements which detail the origin of the funds held". The detailed UK rules are on our UK visit visa bank statement page.

Practical rule: if you are not sure, print six months. It meets the Schengen list, covers the shorter periods Australia and Thailand mention, and gives any officer enough history to see your pattern.

What is a bank account maintenance certificate?

An account maintenance certificate is a letter from your bank confirming that your account exists and is active. Pakistani banks issue it on request. It usually states the account title, account number or IBAN, the date the account was opened, and sometimes the current balance.

It is worth knowing what it is not. None of the UK, Schengen, Australian or Thai official lists we checked names a maintenance certificate as a required document. The Schengen list asks for signed and stamped statements, not a separate letter. Some consulate checklists and visa centres do ask for one, and in our experience it helps when:

  • your account is new, so the officer can see when it was opened
  • your statement is printed in a format without a bank letterhead
  • you are showing an account in a different branch or bank from your salary account

Ask for it on the same day as your statement so the balance and date match. If the certificate shows a balance, it must agree with the closing balance on your statement.

Why do large deposits cause refusals?

This is the problem we see most often. An account with a modest monthly balance suddenly receives a large transfer a few weeks before the application. The officer's question is simple: where did this come from, and will it still be there after the visa is issued?

The UK guidance is direct about it. Where most of the funds "have not been held in their account for long", caseworkers "may want to make further checks to establish the origin of this money". It also flags "large account deposits and / or support received by family / friends" as something the documents must explain.

A large deposit is not a problem in itself. An unexplained one is. If you have a genuine one-off credit, document it:

  • Property or vehicle sale: the sale agreement and the buyer's payment record.
  • Gift from a relative: a signed letter from the giver, their CNIC copy and their own statement showing the money leaving.
  • Business profit transferred to a personal account: the business account statement showing the matching debit.
  • Committee (BC) payout, savings certificate encashment or inheritance: whatever paper record exists, plus a sentence in your cover letter.

What does not work is moving money in for the application and out again afterwards. Officers see this pattern often, and borrowed funds count against you even if the balance looks large.

How do your FBR tax returns connect to your bank statement?

For Schengen applications in Pakistan, tax records are part of the core list. Alongside the six-month statement, the EU list asks for a National Tax Number (NTN) certificate (or proof of exemption) and the Federal Board of Revenue acknowledgement of tax returns for the last two fiscal years. Australia's Home Affairs page also lists tax records as proof of funds.

The officer reads the two together. If large sums pass through your account every month but your return declares only a small income, the gap needs an explanation. In our experience, mismatches between bank turnover and declared income cause more doubt than a modest balance does.

Practical steps:

  1. Register for an NTN through FBR's IRIS portal if you have not already. Individuals can do this online; FBR's registration page explains the process.
  2. File your returns on time. FBR's Active Taxpayer List is published on 1 March each year and updated every Monday, so being an active filer is easy for anyone to check.
  3. Make sure the income on your return and the credits in your account tell the same story.

Can a sponsor's bank account be used instead?

Yes, in most systems, but the sponsor's file has to be as strong as yours would be.

  • UK: support from a third party is allowed. The caseworker guidance says the sponsor must show they have enough funds to support themselves and their dependants as well as you, and must not be in breach of UK immigration law if they live there.
  • Schengen: the EU list asks sponsored applicants for proof of sponsorship, and some countries require their own official form. The Visa Code (Article 14(4)) lets member states require proof of sponsorship or private accommodation.
  • Australia: if a relative or friend in Australia is paying for your stay, Home Affairs asks you to provide proof of their funds.

Whatever the country, include the sponsor's statement, proof of their income, proof of your relationship (FRC or marriage certificate) and a short letter saying what they will pay for. Even when someone else pays, include your own statement so the officer can see your situation at home.

Common mistakes with bank statements

  1. Printing only one or two months when the consulate asks for six.
  2. Unsigned, unstamped printouts for a Schengen file.
  3. Sudden deposits with no paper trail.
  4. A statement older than your other documents. Get it as close to your application date as you can.
  5. Different numbers in different places. The balance on the maintenance certificate, the statement and your application form must match.
  6. Hiding regular commitments. Officers can see loan instalments and school fees on the statement anyway; explain them.
  7. Relying on a balance held in a wallet or app. Keep the funds you rely on in a bank account in your name.

Checklist before you submit

  • Statement covers the period your destination asks for (six months is the safe default)
  • Every page is stamped and signed if you are applying for a Schengen visa
  • Maintenance certificate, if used, is dated the same day as the statement
  • Any large credit has a document and a sentence in your cover letter explaining it
  • NTN certificate and FBR return acknowledgements are included if required
  • Sponsor's statement, income proof and relationship proof are attached if someone else pays
  • Figures match across the form, statement, payslips and tax returns

Requirements are correct as of October 2026 and differ by country and consulate. Always confirm the latest checklist on the official embassy or visa website before applying.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum bank balance for a visit visa from Pakistan?

The UK and Schengen rules do not set one figure for everyone. The Home Office guidance says there is no set level of funds, and the EU Visa Code says funds are assessed against the length and purpose of the stay. A few countries publish a floor: Thailand's e-Visa system, for example, asks for evidence of at least 20,000 baht. Check the official checklist for your destination.

Can I use an e-statement or a screenshot from my banking app?

The Schengen list for Pakistan asks for statements that are signed and stamped by the bank, so an app screenshot does not meet it. For online applications such as the UK, Australia or Thailand you upload scans, but a branch-issued statement on letterhead is still the safer choice. A screenshot is easy to edit, which is exactly what officers worry about.

My salary is paid in cash. Can I still apply?

Yes, but the officer needs to see a pattern. Depositing the same salary into your account each month, with payslips, an employer letter and FBR returns showing the same income, makes the cash believable. A single large cash deposit before applying, with nothing else to support it, usually raises questions instead.

Should I show my joint account or my spouse's account?

You can, if the money is genuinely available to you. Explain who holds the account, include your marriage certificate or Family Registration Certificate, and add a short signed note from your spouse if the account is in their name only. The UK guidance asks for documents that clearly show you have access to the funds.

Do I need a bank statement if my son or daughter abroad is paying?

Usually yes, from both of you. The sponsor shows they can afford the trip and still support themselves, and you show your own situation and ties in Pakistan. A sponsor's statement on its own, with nothing about the applicant, rarely gives the officer a full picture.
